Umpiring: Six Zones — Part IV
Home plate
By Adam Powell
March 9th, 2010

Home plate is absolutely the most significant area on a softball diamond. By far!

From pitches to baserunners, everything has to cross home plate for either team to be successful.

An umpire has a great responsibility to the players, coaches, and spectators. In addition to calling pitches, he is required to make calls at home plate, which anyone will tell you are some of the most exciting plays of all! But if you can maintain control of the game and yourself, you can become an outstanding plate umpire

Being a plate umpire is the most difficult trick of the trade; but if you sign in, you'll get to read some of the ways you can improve your grasp of that job.

By Adam Powell
March 2nd, 2010

Third base can sometimes be a tricky spot to umpire, given the amount of time a crew has worked together and how much pre-game communication is done.

Many important calls are made in this area, as this is the final step in a base runner's progression to home plate.

Don't make the same mistakes I have made at third base, lest you will look like an umpiring greenhorn! Get everything sorted out before the game begins, and third base will be a piece of cake!

There are force-out calls, tagging calls, and baseline calls to be made at this critical halfway point of reaching home. Umpires have a number of options as to where to position themselves around second, each aimed at the goal of always making the right call!

Umpiring: Six Zones — Part I
First base
By Adam Powell
February 16th, 2010

In simplest terms, first base is the gateway to run production in softball. You can't get home without either standing on first or running past it! It's a hot spot during games, where more action takes place than anywhere else with the exception of home plate. Umpires must be prepared to make an abundance of calls in this important zone. Knowing where to be, and what to do when you get there, will make a world of difference in the variety of calls that first base has to offer.
Four Levels of Youth Softball — Part IV
Middle school (13-14 years)
By Adam Powell
January 26th, 2010

Middle school, as the pinnacle of youth softball, is one of the most enjoyable levels any umpire can work. Although butterflies are expected, you don't have to fear such things as rude players or coaches (most of the time). If you have been fortunate enough to land a middle school umpiring role, you will know what you are getting into by reading my article!
