o do we ever go for help?
Yes, we do. We go for help not to get a different opinion on our judgment but to get information. We go because we are missing a piece of information needed to make an accurate judgment. There are really only five times umpires are allowed to get help. They are:
- Missinterpretation of a rule
- A check swing called a ball by the umpire
- A swipe tag or pulled foot (get help before making the call when you can)
- A dropped or bobbled ball on the umpire's blind side on a tag play that another umpire could see.
- Two umpires make different calls on teh same play
The misinterpretation, check swing, and opposite calls are obvious; but let's explore the remaining two. If you have doubt because you are missing a piece of information necessary to make the call, then before making the call, ask your partner for missing piece.
