mpiring the bases in a softball game is possibly the most enjoyable officiating job in all of sports. You don’t have to deal with the pitch-by-pitch grind of a home plate umpire, you don’t have to run around feverishly like a soccer or football official, and you don’t even have to blow annoying whistles! Being in the correct position to make calls is of utmost importance to any good base umpire. Although base umpires do not have to make calls on every pitch, they must have their eyes all over the ball field. They are responsible for a large amount of territory and must be alert at all times.
First base
When nobody is on base, the base umpire typically stands behind first. In these situations, first base has the highest probability of a potential play. Standing behind first will give the umpire the best view of any throws to first along with any hits along the right-field foul line.
