mpires, like everyone else, are always looking for the best (or at least a better) way to do their jobs. Sometimes changes in the way the game is played necessitate changes in the way we umpire. What I mean is: Mechanics and positioning should never be altered just for the sake of being different. The traditional mechanics and positions became standard for sound, logical reasons. They allow the umpire to see the necessary elements of the play by placing him at the most desirable angle and distance while still allowing avenues for adjustment and preserving the arbiter's ability to move efficiently to another play.
