efore starting a recruitment campaign, decide what your need is, what you wish to accomplish, and how you will nourish it. The way you recruit is determined by your need for new umpires. If you do not need umpires, you may be more selective and less aggressive. Not needing new umpires is a rare, possibly non-existent, situation. For most groups recruiting is a constant activity.
What you want to accomplish is a steady flow of new people coming into umpiring to counter-balance the traditional flow of umpires leaving. Establishing an in-coming flow maintains current numbers and, perhaps, increases them. You can accomplish that by developing a way to get people in, a way to make them into umpires, and a way to keep them. Keeping or maintaining anything demands sticking with it. Maintenance is time consuming and relies primarily on volunteers. With a plan it becomes easier, more organized, and satisfying.
The plan
To recruit and retain umpires a good plan should embrace the following ideas:
- Reach prospective umpires.
- Tell them what you have to offer so they want to get involved.
- Teach them well so they feel they are getting something of value.
