Be in the right place!

For infield grounders, which necessitate a throw to first to beat the runner, an umpire wants an angle that allows him to see the base itself and the ball reaching the first baseman's glove. Standing a few feet behind the base, in foul territory, usually offers the best view for such plays. If a bad throw forces the first baseman to move up or down the baseline, it is acceptable (and expected) for you to take measures to get out of the way.
