Most umpire manuals provide coverage for only two positions for making calls on tag plays at the plate:
Position A
In the two-umpire system, the plate umpire, after covering a play at third base, must return to make any potential call at the plate.
Usually, afer a play at third that allows the runner to advance, the plate umpire will return to home in fair territory. That occurs because most of the time the ball will roll into playable foul territory. With the ball outside the diamond, the plate umpire will want to be inside the diamond.
